VTHS Wolfpack Advances to Sarachek Round 3

Valley Torah moves on to the Sarachek 2022 semi-finals as they defeated #10, Magen David, in an intense matchup Friday afternoon. The Wolfpack started the game off slow, while Magen David (MDY) came out on fire hitting a couple of threes and getting into the paint for a few tough buckets. Valley Torah seemed stalled for the first quarter as MDY reached their biggest lead of the game, 19-5, with 1:48 left in the quarter after a powerful and-1 by Sakkal. A pair of buckets from Johnny Dan (’23) and David Paz (’22) gave the Wolfpack some momentum, cutting Magen David’s lead to a 9-point game heading into the second quarter.

Valley Torah, carrying the momentum from those few buckets at the end of the first quarter, went on an 11-0 comeback run to start off the 2nd! A few big layups by the Wolfpack put them down by only 3 points two minutes into the 2nd. As the quarter continued, a couple of impressive threes by Ethan List (’24) and Noam Mayouhas (’23) helped the Wolfpack regain the lead. Valley Torah ended the first half out-scoring Magen David by 16-6 in the second quarter and gained a one-point lead heading into the locker room.

With the score at the half being 26-25, Valley Torah and Magen David came into the second half exchanging bucket after bucket making it a close game throughout half of the third quarter. However, huge back-to-back threes mid-quarter from Daniel Hirsch (’22) lit up a spark for the Wolfpack as they later went on to take an 8-point lead, 44-36, going into the fourth.

Magen David, down by their largest deficit of the game by 10, tried to make multiple fourth-quarter runs but they had no answers for the Wolfpack’s hard press on defense. Valley Torah got it done on both ends of the court and dominated the paint all quarter long as Johnny Dan (’23) put up an array of layups. Down the line, Noam Mayouhas (’23) threw on the finishing touches knocking down four free throws to secure the win, 58-51. Johnny Dan finished with a game-high 26 points along with Noam Mayouhas, who dropped 14 points and 5 assists.

Valley Torah moves on to the Sarachek Tier 1 semi-finals to face #3 TABC on Sunday at 1:00 PM PST. Wolfpack fans cheer their team on from the crowded Yeshiva University arena in New York and from their hometown Valley Village, CA.
