The story of Shimshon is an important story and lesson in the Torah for many reasons, but the main one is the importance of the spiritual strength in a man’s hair. Not only is it a powerful and meaningful story but it is law in Judaism that you cannot put a razor on your face. In essence, it’s saying that there are four corners of your face that you are not allowed to touch with a razor. Those corners are the temples, the chin/jawline, and upper lip. It specifies these corners but it’s basically everything from the top of your neck and up to the hairline.
Even though that is very important, this story isn’t simply about the laws of shaving. It shows through the countless miracles Shimshon hagibor was able to perform through G-d, and it always makes sure to emphasize that it comes from the strength of his hair, since he made sure to never cut it. Shimshon was someone who was called a nazir, which is a man that does not cut his hair, does not drink alcohol and they cannot go near grapes.
All of Shimshon’s strength came from his hair. This period that all these miracles and great things were occurring was magnificent and entertaining but as time went on, Shimshon’s life began to change when he met Delilah. She repeatedly questioned him about the secret of his strength until he finally told her about his vow as a nazir. While he was sleeping, Delilah had his hair cut off, and when he woke up, his strength was gone. The Philistines captured him and took him prisoner.
This shows that his hair was not just about appearance. It represented his commitment to Hashem and his promise as a nazir. Later, while imprisoned, his hair began to grow back. In his final moments, he prayed to Hashem for strength one last time, and Hashem answered him.
I believe this story teaches us that hair can have a much deeper meaning in Judaism than people realize. The laws of peiyot and the laws of a nazir are different, but both show how something as simple as hair can have spiritual importance. Ultimately, Shimshon’s story reminds us that true strength comes from Hashem, faith, and keeping our commitments.
