January 19, 2026 marked a devastating tragedy when two infants lost their lives at a daycare center after carbon monoxide poisoning, while 53 additional children and staff members were rushed to hospitals for emergency treatment. The incident sent shockwaves throughout Israel and raised urgent questions about child safety and government oversight. The daycare was operating out of a small five-room apartment and was not registered as an official childcare facility, meaning it functioned entirely outside legal and regulatory supervision.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Education released a statement clarifying that the facility had never been approved or inspected. A spokesperson stated, “We were not familiar with this daycare, and its operators never applied for approval.” This revelation intensified public outrage, as parents and lawmakers demanded accountability and stricter enforcement of childcare regulations.

The tragedy quickly became a central topic of confrontation within the Knesset. During an emotional session, Children’s Rights Committee Chair MK Katy Sheetrit strongly condemned the situation, declaring, “It is unacceptable that unlicensed facilities operate unchecked and put children’s lives at risk.” Her remarks reflected a broader concern that gaps in oversight allowed dangerous conditions to persist, ultimately leading to fatal consequences.

Emergency responders acted swiftly, evacuating the building and transporting dozens of victims to nearby hospitals. Many families endured hours of fear and uncertainty as doctors worked to stabilize those affected. Thankfully, most of the hospitalized individuals were later reported to be in stable condition.

Further investigation determined that no hazardous materials were present within the apartment. Authorities ultimately ruled that the poisoning resulted from gas exposure caused by a faulty heating device, rather than an external or intentional source.

This heartbreaking event serves as a painful reminder of the importance of proper regulation and vigilance when it comes to protecting children. May Hashem watch over all of us and keep us safe. May Hashem grant a Refua Shelema to all the families and children who were involved and who continue to recover from this tragedy.
