The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the academic world were shaken by the death of Professor Nuno Loureiro, a physicist and director of MIT’s Plasma Science & Fusion Center. On the night of December 15, 2025, Loureiro was found shot in his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, and he died the following morning at the age of 47.

Loureiro was originally from Portugal and joined MIT in 2016. He was known around the world for his work in nuclear physics, fusion science, and engineering. Beyond his research, he was a dedicated mentor, guiding students with patience and care. He led his team at the Plasma Science & Fusion Center with focus and integrity, and his colleagues admired him not just for his scientific skill but for his generosity and thoughtfulness.

MIT President Sally Kornbluth called his death a “shocking loss,” reflecting how deeply Loureiro was valued in the community. Students, faculty, and researchers around the world have shared their sorrow, remembering both his achievements and the ways he supported and inspired those around him.

The police are investigating his death, as Cláudio Neves Valente, 48, is the alleged suspect of both the Loureiro and Brown University atrocities. It is believed that Valente killed Loureiro over an academic rivalry. In fact, the two were classmates many years ago.

Even in grief, people are remembering Loureiro as a scientist who pushed the boundaries of knowledge and as a person who cared about the people around him. His contributions to science and the guidance he gave to students will be remembered for years to come, but his absence is already felt deeply by everyone who knew him.
