On December 17, our 10th Grade Honors Gemara class celebrated Chanukah at the home of Rabbi and Rebetzen Semmel. After morning davening (prayer), our class walked to their house, where we were welcomed with a carefully prepared spread. The delicious food included eggs, lox, bagels, coffee, and lemonade, providing a simple yet satisfying start to the gathering.
Following the meal, we participated in a gift exchange. This year, Rabbi Semmel organized a white elephant game, allowing participants to either open a new gift or steal one that had already been revealed. The exchange brought a quiet excitement, as students carefully weighed their choices. Among the gifts were basketball cards, board games, and other small items that reflected the variety of interests within the class. The game encouraged light competition but also fostered a sense of shared enjoyment and camaraderie.
After the exchange, we concluded the celebration with Krispy Kreme doughnuts and cookies, providing a sweet finish to the afternoon. Though the event was simple in structure, it was meaningful in its ability to bring the class together and mark the season in a thoughtful way.
The gathering was made possible through the generosity and effort of Rabbi and Rebetzen Semmel. Their hospitality and attention to detail created an environment in which students could engage, celebrate, and connect. The party was not merely a casual social event but a chance to reflect on the communal and familial aspects of Chanukah. It was an afternoon marked by good food, shared laughter, and quiet moments of appreciation for both the holiday and the community around us.
I am grateful to Rabbi and Rebetzen Semmel for their time, energy, and dedication in organizing this celebration, which will remain a memorable part of our school year.
