On December 13, a gunman entered the Barus and Holley building and opened fire on the floor where students were preparing for an exam. Two students were killed and nine others were injured.

Several of the wounded were reported to be in critical condition, while the remaining victims were treated and released. Those who died were Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, a future surgeon and vice president of the College Republicans, and Ella Cook, 19, a campus leader and member of the Republican Union of Students.

A man was briefly detained but later released after investigators determined he was not connected to the attack. Police have released a photo and video of a person seen fleeing the scene; however, no arrests have been made as of the latest update. Law enforcement has increased their presence across several areas of the campus.

Opinion leaders from cities and states nationwide have expressed grief and solidarity as the investigation continues. The FBI and local authorities are actively searching for the shooter, described only as a man wearing dark clothing.
