On May 12th, 2024, a helicopter crash near the Azerbaijan border claimed the lives of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and six other passengers, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amirabdollahian. The crash was attributed to poor weather conditions, resulting in the loss of all individuals on board.
Raisi held conservative views in all aspects of governance. Regarding the economy, he emphasized self-sufficiency and resisting foreign influence, particularly that of the United States and the Western world.
In terms of foreign policy, he supported Iran’s stance in regional conflicts and defended Iran’s right to pursue its nuclear program. Concerning Israel, Raisi maintained a hostile stance, rejecting Israel’s legitimacy, denying the Holocaust, and supporting anti-Israeli policies and groups in the region, such as Hamas. Additionally, he often expressed skepticism or opposition to American influence in the region and supported policies aimed at countering American dominance.
As well, Raisi held strict social beliefs, largely rooted in his conservative Islamic ideology. Regarding religion, Raisi followed Islamic principles and issued the primacy of Islam in society. For example, women were forced to wear hijabs or hair coverings. He also played a key role in the development of the Mortality Police, which aimed to enforce modest dress and chaste behavior of women. Another notable aspect under his tenure was a horrific rise of executions, aimed towards those who broke the anti-narcotic policy.
Supreme Leader Khamenei announced that Vice President Mohammad Mokhber would take over as interim president. Subsequently, an election is scheduled for June 28th to choose a new president.
